In the news !

Shehla Rahman is one of Pakistan’s four leading lady artists. She learnt to draw and paint in Kuala Lumpur where the family lived and from where she subsequently graduated in Art History. Her first teacher was her mother, an established and gifted artist, and years later in Karachi Shehla worked with the legendary Sadequain who taught her the intricate art of calligraphy in which he was a renowned master. She also worked in Rome with senior Italian based artist Yahya Shafi.

In Kuala Lumpur the family lived close to a rain forest which fostered her love for nature. Her father had a stud farm and she developed great affection for horses which she painted with a rare élan and panache. After the many picnics to Port Dixon on the southern coast of Malaysia she acquired a fondness for the ocean and for years whether in Ostia Lido, near Rome, Jomtein near Pattaya or Somniani Beach near Karachi, she produced a series of elegant paintings which depicted the many moods of the sea.

Shehla Rahman displays a highly distinctive style in her paintings, whether they are huge mural that overwhelm the viewer or delightful cheerful cameos of everyday objects as they present themselves. There are no hidden innuendos or double entendres in her work, no risk taking ideas in which definitions can be challenged and the brain teased. Her work has a purely artistic and poetic appeal and still finds its response in the absence of subsidiary interests and attractions.

Shehla Rahman has traveled extensively and has been a guest of the government of Switzerland, Turkey and South Korea and held a number of solo exhibitions abroad. She also painted for the Agha Khan and the king of Malaysia, HRH Aslan Shah and received an award from the Governor of Antalya for her portrait of the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Attaturk.

Her themes have included still life, nudes and landscapes. She has also tackled social issues like terrorism and crimes against women and designed postage stamps for Pakistan. Another area in which she has excelled is the restoration of paintings by other artists. Her work can be found in private collections in different parts of the world.
